Diamond education: the shape

By Solomon Brothers Fine Jewelry

With so many different shapes to choose from, you can select a diamond that truly reflects the personailty and style of your future bride.

Round diamonds are the only diamonds with the necessary dimensions and proportions to be graded as ideal. (the cut that reflects the maximum amount of light).
Although the classic round diamond continues to be the traditional choice for engagement rings, many brides today are also choosing other shaped diamonds.

Most fancy shaped diamonds can vary greatly - some being more squarely shaped while others are more rectangular. These proportions are measured by the length to width ratio.

A perfectly square diamond will have a ratio of 1.0. A longer more rectangular diamond may have a ratio of 1.3 or 1.4. some very long, slender shapes, such as the Marquise, can have a ratio of 2.0 or higher.
